Welcoming our new Behaviour Support Specialist, Grace

Grace has recently joined the Behaviour Support team at Open Minds after first working with us as a Support Worker, and graduating with a Diploma in Psychology.

Grace joined the Open Minds Behaviour Support Team in January 2022, having moved to the Sunshine Coast from Townsville where she was an Open Minds Support Worker.

After 4 years of studying psychology and then graduating, Grace leapt at the chance to apply for an internal role in Positive Behaviour Support, and move to the Sunshine Coast.

She has always had a passion for caring for others, having worked as a pharmacy assistant and then choosing to study psychology to further pursue an interest in human behaviour.

Her new role sees Grace able to support clients on the Sunshine Coast who require Positive Behaviour Support, to improve their quality of life.

Grace said: “I hope in my role I can ensure that the Positive Behaviour Plans I work on for my clients will be truly tailored to their individual needs. This job is all about improving their quality of life and reducing restrictive practices, so I’ll be sure to get to know each client and really understand them first.”

In her work with clients, Grace will produce person-centred and evidence-based behaviour support plans, allowing clients to improve their quality of life and reach their individual goals.

Grace considers herself a “nature freak” and loves exploring the outdoors, whether it’s the beach or waterfalls.

Grace said: “When I was a Support Worker I used to take my clients out for walks around the botanical gardens and we’d have chats, coffees, and admire the beautiful nature around us.

“I think nature has a positive impact on people’s mental health and I hope to be able to connect with my new behaviour support clients in the same way.

“I love that Open Minds was supportive of my move to the Sunshine Coast, I think the organisation has a culture of prioritising care towards clients as well as staff.

“I also love the team based culture where there’s always someone to collaborate with, I always feel supported and never feel alone.”

Sarah, Manager Positive Behaviour Support, said: “Grace has gained valuable experience working with adults with complex physical and mental health needs over the years and combined with her study I am confident she has the skills and experience to succeed in her new role.”
