If you need urgent support during or following a mental health crisis, The Way Back is an aftercare service for those who have attempted or are at risk of suicide. Open Minds helps connect you with specialised clinical care and practical supports that are tailored to your individual recovery needs.

Specialised crisis support
for attempted suicideThe Way Back is a specialised service for people who are currently going through a suicidal crisis or are at immediate risk of taking their own life.
We will contact you within one working day of your application to connect you with qualified health professionals, who will take you into aftercare for up to three months to ensure your safety and stability during times of crisis.
The Way Back provides a series of supports that cover the crucial risk period of emotional distress that typically follows a suicide attempt. Services that address some of the major issues of distress include:
- Connecting you to community or support groups
- Providing financial advice
- Assisting with healthcare appointments

The Way Back aims to:
- Improve access to high-quality aftercare that supports at-risk individuals
- Build the capacity of individuals to self-manage their distress and improve their mental well-being
- Improve links with clinical and community-based services to meet individual needs and circumstances
- Increase social connectedness to supportive networks such as families, friends, peers, and carers

Am I eligible for a Way Back referral?
The Way Back is for individuals who have attempted suicide, experienced a suicidal crisis, or are are risk of suicide.
To be eligible for a referral, a person must:
- Be referred after presenting to a hospital emergency department or mental health support in an eligible local health district following a suicide attempt.
or
- Be referred after presenting to a hospital emergency department or community mental health service in an eligible local health district while in or following a suicidal crisis.

Step 1
If you’re in a period immediately following a suicide attempt, you may be referred from your local Hospital and Health Service.

Once you have been referred to us, we’ll contact you to start providing the best possible care and support.

We’re committed to staying by your side, providing a network of support resources to help you navigate your recovery journey towards healing and stability.
