Wattle Day – A symbol of resilience and unity

As we celebrated Wattle Day on 1 September, Open Minds proudly acknowledges the deep connection between our organisation and the golden wattle, a symbol of resilience, unity, and the enduring Australian spirit.

Wattle Day is more than just a day of celebration – it’s a reminder of the values that have shaped our organisation’s journey for more than 110 years.

Open Minds began its journey in 1912 as the Queensland Wattle Day League, a time when the golden wattle was being recognised as Australia’s national floral emblem.

The League was established to promote Wattle Day and to raise funds for community projects. Over the years, this mission expanded to meet the evolving needs of the community, focusing on supporting those living with disabilities and mental health challenges.

At Open Minds, we embrace this spirit of resilience in our work, empowering individuals to overcome challenges and build independent, fulfilling lives.

Just as the wattle blooms across Australia, bringing life and colour to the landscape, our services aim to bring hope and support to those who need it most.

In 2024, Open Minds continues to be a leading provider of mental health services, helping people achieve their goals and live their best lives. Our connection to Wattle Day reminds us of our roots and the importance of staying true to the values of compassion, support, and community.

Wattle Day is not just a celebration of our national flower – it’s a celebration of the enduring strength of our communities.

We are proud to be part of this legacy, continuing our mission to support people in the community living with mental health concerns and psychosocial disabilities, just as we have done since our beginnings in 1912.
