Supporting the Masso family in the community

Open Minds began working with the Masso family: Alick, Gerard, Isiah and Renee, who are based in Townsville, in December 2016. The three brothers and one sister identify as Indigenous, and all have disabilities.

The Masso’s love the outdoors and engaging with the community, so it was crucial for Open Minds to offer support services to enable them to do as much as possible of what they enjoy.

The Open Minds team takes the family for fun day trips to Bushland Beach, Balgal Beach, Riverway, Pallaranda and Ross River Dam. This includes assisting with packing an Esky for the day, and activities such as BBQs, fishing, swimming, shopping, walks and going to the gym.

The long-term goal of the siblings is to move out of their mother’s home and live together. Open Minds helps support them towards achieving this goal of independence.
