Be a voice for change
in the mental health space

Almost half of all Australians will experience a mental health crisis at some point in their life. For many, the most disabling aspect is being excluded from things others in the community take for granted.

This Mental Health Week, Open Minds is encouraging those with lived experience to join a group of advocates leading systematic change in the mental health space.

The Mental Health Lived Experience Peak Queensland (MHLEPQ) acts as a collective voice for consumers of mental health services across the state. They have a strong focus on the social determinants of mental health.

Funded by Queensland Health, the MHLEPQ drives reform through shared experience – and they want more voices to be heard.

Any Queenslander over the age of 18 who has experienced mental illness or suicidality is eligible for membership.

Members are invited to provide advice, share personal perspectives and participate in research.

Above all, they’re united by a vision of a mental health system every Queenslander deserves.

Open Minds Chief Operating Officer, Kate Johnson said community support is fundamental for driving change within mental health services.

“The role of the MHLEPQ in championing the voices of those who have experienced mental illness or suicidality is extraordinary.”

“Lived experience is a powerful tool for creating meaningful change, and this can’t be done without the support of the community.”
