Mark finds a place to call home

Mark had been sleeping rough for four months when he was informed of possible accommodation during a hospital stay.

With the support of Open Minds Townsville and his social worker, Mark secured the available unit and began turning his life around.

“I am more mentally stable now,” said Mark.

“I have three meals a day and am no longer on my feet, constantly moving from place to place.”

Mark lives with schizophrenia and his support hours with Open Minds had previously been consumed with searching for somewhere to live.

During this time he was forced to sleep on the beach, frequently having his possessions stolen and sometimes forgetting to take his medication.

The experience has made him grateful to finally have a roof over his head.

“My home is beautiful,” said Mark.

“When I first walked in, I saw a brand–new television still in the box.”

“I can keep cool with air conditioning and have a warm shower whenever I need.”

Open Minds Townsville Care Leader, Brendan said Mark is flourishing in his new home.

“Now that Mark has found suitable accommodation, we are able to spend time on other areas of his NDIS plan,” said Brendan.

“This includes bowling, swimming, going for walks and drives. He recently spent time volunteering planting trees.”

“He is making positive life choices and setting new goals, and I’m thrilled with the progress he has made.”

Mark was previously supported by Open Minds when he lived in Brisbane, and when accessing the NDIS in Townsville, he requested that Open Minds be his provider once again.

Now he wants others to feel just as supported as he does.

“A friend told me that he needed NDIS support, so I recommended Open Minds to him,” said Mark.
