Open Minds Community Re-Entry Services Team (CREST) in Townsville are planting the seeds of hope for people navigating the criminal justice system in far north Queensland and supporting them to avoid recidivism (reoffending).

Our Community Re-Entry Services Team (CREST) are Case Workers who work at the Townsville Male & Female Correctional Centres and in Community (Community Corrections) to support clients to prepare for their release from prison and facilitate a smooth transition back to the community. CREST works with Queensland Corrective Services using a co-case management model to provide individual support and advocacy.

Services

  • Linking with housing accommodation providers in Townsville or outlying regions.
  • Providing information about alcohol or other drug counselling, treatment, and education
  • Providing support and connections to Services Australia and relevant banking services
  • Supporting people through medical or mental health connections
  • Seeking individualised information about physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Providing Family & Domestic Violence support referrals for both survivors and offenders
  • Identifying social support networks
  • Connecting with family and friends
  • Work, education & training planning, and referrals
  • Connecting with culture and spiritual wellbeing
  • Making positive behavioural changes

Our aim is to empower people to make healthy choices, improve their own success, reduce reoffending, and maintain a positive lifestyle.  


What to expect

Our support starts in custody where our team will work with people to plan their release.  Once released our team will put the release plan into action.  We are passionate about supporting and advocating for all people and will forge connections with the right community supports for each individual.
