Tips for attaining and maintaining good Mental Health, this World Mental Health Week

How to attain and maintain good mental health: tips from our Senior Clinician / Clinical Psychologist at the Open Minds Mental Health Hub at Morayfield.

This year, Mental Health Week in Australia runs from Saturday 10 October to Sunday 18 October, with the emphasis on all Australians to take time for their Mental Health.

With 2020, being dominated by the global pandemic, social isolation, physical distancing and many around Australia facing challenges that they have never encountered before, Mental Health Week is a great reminder to take notice of your own mental health and wellbeing, as well as those around you.

The Open Minds Mental Health Hub at Morayfield has qualified psychologists and counsellors who are experienced and trained to help you if you’re having a rough time who are available for face-to-face or online sessions.

Leila Grey, Senior Clinician and Clinical Psychologist at the Mental Health Hub, says her top tips for attaining and maintaining good mental health are:

  • Maintain good physical health with good nutrition, regular activity with a regular routine and sleep pattern.
  • Practice regular present moment awareness through mindfulness or grounding exercises.
  • Invest in healthy relationships with connection to people you care about.
  • Prioritise your own wellbeing with fun and enjoyable activities that promote self-care and relaxation.

Leila reminds us all that: “If you are in crisis or in danger, or if you think you might harm yourself, or you have seriously harmed yourself, call triple zero (000) for emergency services. Help is available if you need it”.

If you just feel like you need to talk to someone, it’s a good idea to have a family member or that special friend to talk to about how you are feeling. They can quite often give you support and talk you through steps to deal with how you are feeling”.

Of course, if you don’t feel comfortable talking to family or friends about how you feel or what you are going through, visit your local doctor or healthcare professional. They will be able to provide referrals and direct you to professional support if you need it.

The Mental Health Hub offers face-to-face appointments in Morayfield and also now offers virtual appointments via Doctors on Demand. Appointments are available to patients with a mental health care plan and referral, as well as the option for private, low-cost appointments for those without a referral.

The Mental Health Hub is located within the state-of-the-art Health Hub precinct in Morayfield.  The Hub features  General Practice, Minor Accident & Illness Centre, X-Ray & Imaging facilities, dental, clinical trials centre, brain treatment centre, pathology, hearing services, as well as a rehabilitation clinic, pharmacy, Mum & Bub Hub, and an onsite café.
