We hear from our clients a lot that they need 24/7 Supported Independent Living, but they want to maintain their privacy and independence. The new concierge model answers this need: we can support clients around the clock, whilst they maintain the privacy of living in their own home.
In 2020, Open Minds was proud to partner with Summer Housing to provide a concierge model of accommodation to clients in Brisbane metro north.
The concierge model means that Open Minds support staff rotate in shifts to permanently occupy a unit in the same apartment block.
Staff are on hand 24/7 to support the clients who live there, whilst allowing those clients the privacy of living in their own apartments.
Not only does this provide clients with independence and freedom, but it also means multiple clients can pool their NDIS Supported Independent Living funding together and use the savings elsewhere in their NDIS package.
So rather than each client pay for 24/7 Supported Independent Living in their own home, 10 clients can live in a state-of-the-art apartment block and share the cost of the support staff.
So what’s the catch? It all sounds too good to be true…
There’s no catch, in fact the apartment block, based in Bowen Hills, is brand new and boasts a rooftop sky garden, panoramic views of Brisbane City, fire pit, three BBQs, and an all-purpose gym and Pilates studio.
Robert*, resident at the Bowen Hills apartment complex and client of Open Minds, said: “I’m stoked with my new home. I prefer living on my own because I’ve always been independent, but I also have know that the Open Minds staff are just down the corridor when I need them. They assist me every day with anything physical that my disability prevents me from doing by myself, but other than that I have the whole apartment to myself. I feel like I’ve won the lottery being able to live somewhere that has a rooftop BBQ area and a gym!”
This new and innovative model of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) was developed by Summer Housing, and Open Minds is the proud Supported Independent Living (SIL) provider.
