A new start on life thanks to Indooroopilly’s Enhanced headspace Service

The team at headspace Indooroopilly (operated by Open Minds) recently celebrated the opportunity to present the incredible outcomes of their Enhanced headspace Services (EhS) at the 2022 headspace National Forum (the Forum).

Indooroopilly’s EhS has received national interest following the Forum presentation delivered by headspace Clinical Services Manager, Sam Kilby, Youth & Family Support Coordinator, Emily Logan and Mental Health Clinician, Emma Martinot.

EhS is a specialised 12-month program to support the ‘missing middle’ of young people experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties who require more support than that provided by primary health services, but whose mental health is not severe enough to qualify for support through Australia’s tertiary health services.

Since its establishment in 2019, EhS has helped nearly 100 young people to heal from trauma and build hope for their future. Many participants experienced a significant decline in depression, stress and anxiety and demonstrated increased levels of psychosocial functioning.

As the team responsible for overseeing the program, Sam, Emily and Emma have seen many benefits for young people receiving support through the EhS including a 68% reduction in extremely severe levels of depressive symptoms 37% reduction in extremely severe levels of anxiety and 55% reduction in extremely severe levels of stress, regardless of whether or not the program is completed in full.

“EhS leverages and combines the skills and expertise of our Youth & Family Support Coordinator and our Mental Health Clinician, to deliver an intensive and consistent service over 12 months of engagement,” said Sam. “The program structure provides a wonderful net of support through clinical intervention, psychosocial support and care coordination.

“We are extremely proud to deliver this service because with each EhS participant, we get to see those young people grow their ability to manage their mental health independently and find their passion in life.

“When participants tell us their life is finally beginning after completing EhS, I couldn’t think of anything more satisfying than that as a mental health professional,” said Sam.

A young person who received support through EhS was excited to share their outcomes.

“I have felt a complete sense of respect and trust with the team at headspace who push me to go further with my new ways of thinking. I could not recommend the service enough to people who feel they need it, as it has changed my life for the better,” they said.
