Luis raises awareness of mental health through athletic events

Luis, a Logan-based Open Minds Support Worker, has been competing at various athletic competitions to help raise awareness of mental health, including the legendary Hells Bells 24 hours race.

Luis has committed to a regular and intensive training schedule over the past 12 months to prepare for these events.

Luis is a former professional athlete who experienced depression after moving to Australia seven years ago. As part of his recovery, he was encouraged to reconnect with his true self via sport and physical training.

“I love competing in high-level athletic competitions, like triathlons and adventure races. It takes a lot of time and energy to train for them, but it helps my mental health and challenges me to do and be better,” explained Luis.

“It wouldn’t be possible to do these competitions without the support of my family and colleagues. I’m very grateful for that,” said Luis.

Luis joined Open Minds as a Support Worker nine months ago and enjoys supporting clients through their individual recovery journeys with NDIS services.

Luis hopes his determination and commitment to his physical and mental health inspires clients to try things out of their comfort zones. Luis openly demonstrates to clients the skills and abilities he has acquired to enable recovery.

“I encourage clients to stay positive and hope to be a good role model for them,” he said.

One of Luis’ goals is to write a book about his experience with depression so that he can help others going through similar challenges.

Physical and mental health are interwoven. Regular physical activity is encouraged to improve mental health through the release of endorphins and serotonin (feel-good chemicals), among other general health benefits

Open Minds provides a range of services and can support NDIS eligible clients with their mental health journey. Find out more on our website
