Dream of a new scooter becomes a reality thanks to the NDIS

Amanda, a client of Open Minds, recently bought the scooter of her dreams thanks to the NDIS, enabling her to be more independent and confident.

Amanda, aged 42 from Logan, acquired a brain injury from a motor vehicle accident many years ago, and has struggled with mobility ever since.

One of her goals has been to upgrade her old, outdated scooter to an electric one with better safety and security features.

Purple is her favourite colour, which was an important factor when selecting her vibrant new purple scooter.

Her new scooter is faster, comes with a canopy to shade her from the sun, has a handy basket to hold Amanda’s shopping, and even has a lockable compartment to keep her bag secure.

Amanda said: “I LOVE my new scooter. I wish to become more independent within my local community. My new scooter will help me achieve this now.”

Due to Amanda’s Acquired Brain injury, she experiences poor balance and cannot walk long distances.

After a functional assessment performed by an Occupational Therapist, and Open Minds assisting Amanda with her NDIS application, the NDIS funded the purchase of her new scooter.

Amanda has received support from Open Minds for over 15 years, and is delighted with the quality of support. She said: “My family appreciate Open Minds and know how important the support that I receive from Open Minds is to me.”

Amanda is a single mother of a 20 year old son. She currently receives support 5 days per week for activities of daily living and to access the local community.
