What is Supported Independent Living concierge model of service?

The SIL concierge model of service allows a group of clients to live in the privacy of their own Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) modern apartment. Each client contributes a portion of their SIL funding to have an Open Minds Support Worker live on-site

Open Minds partnered with Summer Housing in 2020 to provide a unique style of Supported Independent Living (SIL) – the concierge model of service.

SIL is where residents receive support 24/7 in their home to help them live as independently as possible. This can be multiple residents sharing one home or one person receiving support in their own home.

The SIL concierge model of service allows a group of clients to live in the privacy of their own Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) modern apartment. Each client contributes a portion of their SIL funding to have an Open Minds Support Worker live on-site in a separate apartment, to be available on an agreed schedule or for emergencies.

Open Minds Intake and Residential Manager, Chole Day said, “This type of service is ideal for someone who is very independent and perhaps just needs support at different times of the day with an activity that they cannot do on their own, such as showering or the peace of mind that staff are available in an emergency.”

“This is a fairly new offering to the mental health and disability sector and Open Minds is happy for the opportunity to work with SDA housing providers to offer this to our clients,” she said.

Robert, resident at the Bowen Hills apartment complex and client of Open Minds said: “I’m stoked with my new home. I prefer living on my own because I’ve always been independent, but I also have the security of knowing that the Open Minds staff are just down the corridor when I need them. I feel like I’ve won the lottery being able to live somewhere that has a rooftop BBQ area and a gym!”

Chole explains further, “We are seeing more and more enquiries from families who have loved ones that are desperate to live in their own place, but will need more and more help as their mental health or disability progresses.  This model of care means we are on-hand for emergencies and also have the ability to engage the other areas within our service when the time is right and the client needs to move into a home with higher support needs.”

Open Minds is excited to work with SDA Provider, Adapt Housing, to offer a range of new modern purpose-built apartments with 24/7 support available at Loganholme. These one and two bedroom apartments are situated in a quiet neighbourhood, with easy access to the pacific motorway, public transport and the bustling Hyperdome shopping and entertainment precinct nearby.

If you are aged between 18 – 65 years, have an approved NDIS funding package including Supported Independent Living in your package, get in touch today to discuss how we can help you to live as independently as possible.
