headspace Strathpine is open to support young people

Open Minds is delighted to operate the newly opened headspace centre in Strathpine. The centre, located on 441 Gympie Road, Strathpine, will provide counselling, psychology and employment support services for young people aged 12 – 25.

Open Minds has partnered with headspace as we know the importance of supporting people with their mental health from a young age, to help them learn strategies and ways to cope in tough times.

It’s also a great way to teach young people to reach out for help in later stages of life when they need it.

Roughly 75% of mental health issues develop before a person turns 25, which is why providing support at this crucial time in a person’s life leads to better long-term health and psychosocial outcomes.

In 2020, Open Minds supported 2307 young people at Redcliffe and Taringa headspace centres and completed over 11,300 Occasions of Service.

These numbers are well above national averages in comparison to other headspace centres around Australia.

The Strathpine centre first opened its doors in November 2020, and within less than three months, had already supported 104 young people in the local area.

Paula Mayson, CEO of Open Minds said: “We are already seeing a wonderful engagement from young people here at the Strathpine Centre and I think this speaks volumes to the need of our younger community. We feel sure that the Strathpine headspace centre will become a safe space for many more young people to feel comfortable accessing supports in the future.”

What does headspace Strathpine do?

headspace Strathpine provides free or low-cost psychology, counselling and employment support services to young people. This includes mental health support, treatment and management plans.

It also can provide advice on physical health, sexual health, dealing with the stress of work and study, and help with alcohol and other drug concerns.

The team at Strathpine is made up of qualified mental health practitioners, who take a caring and warm approach when helping young people going through a difficult time in their lives.

Each team member has a common goal: to help get young people back on track and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health in the future.

Our vision at Open Minds is to improve young people’s mental, social and emotional wellbeing through the provision of high quality, integrated services when and where they are needed.

Phoebe Escott-Kenny, Community Development Officer at headspace Strathpine, said: “Our new centre in Strathpine has officially been open for a couple of months, but we already have plenty of young people walking through the door for a variety of appointments. As you can see from the photos, our space is fresh, modern and inviting – and with so many upcoming things planned for young people in our area, there’s never been a better time to pick up the phone and give us a call to find out how we can support you! Feel free to pop your head in for a sticky beak while you’re walking past and don’t forget our vibrant 16×9 metre mural wall out the back of the centre – it makes for perfect selfies!”
